Urbana High School

Certified 2020, 2024 application

Advisor: Elizabeth McCook

Led by a Green Club of 130 plus members, Urbana High School focuses on sustainable practices and constantly looks for ways to improve. In 2018, they launched a cafeteria composting and recycling initiative with the support of Lunch Out of Landfills. The success of this program inspired other schools. Along with share tables and other food recovery efforts, reducing food waste at school has kept nearly 100 lbs of food waste out of the landfill every day and has helped decrease the county’s greenhouse gas emissions. Students participate in youth climate summits and 20 students enrolled in the Youth Climate Institute.  Partnerships with the local Rotary have led to the creation of a youth Interact club on campus.
