Participant in Mobilize Frederick workshop
The highlights of the M.O.L.E. workshop were being with other educators who are passionate about getting students outside, learning about new lessons that are available now, and being outside!
Educator Resources
Mobilize Frederick develops and provides resources and facilitates professional learning opportunities to advance Green Schools. By utilizing these resources, schools can meet various criteria in Objective 1 of the Maryland Green Schools application.
FOR THE CLASSROOM
M.O.L.E. Kit
Mobile Outdoor Learning Equipment (M.O.L.E.) kits for elementary schools provide teachers with tools to lead science lessons outdoors. The kits incorporate themes from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Schoolyard Report Card, which can be used by students to assess the health of their schoolyards.
Sample Outdoor Lessons
Native Bee Activity Kit
Maryland is home to 400 species of native bees. Discover the different types of bees, their importance to our local ecosystems, the variety of nests they make, and how to support their habitat. Adapted from “Bee at Home,” MD Department of Natural Resources WILD at School program.
Kit includes:
Bee identification tools, supplies for modeling mason bee nests, bee/nest matching cards, Am I Even a Bee by Felicity Muth and The Bumblebee Queen by April Pulley Sayre.
Contact us to help lead the activities or borrow the kit.
Enviroscape Model
Our traveling Enviroscape model introduces students and communities to watersheds and the role they play in clean water.
Frederick County Watershed Fact Sheets and Health Reports
Contact us to schedule a demonstration in your class, STEM night, or other community event.
WORKSHOPS AND PRESENTATIONS
We coordinate a variety of workshops and presentations to support teachers and staff throughout the year.
Green Schools: Getting Started Workshop
At the Green Schools: Getting Started workshops, teachers and staff learn the main objectives of Green Schools, assess the work already underway at their schools, discover community-based resources, and share tips and ideas with colleagues.
Environmental STEM Workshop
Educators explore and engage in activities from the Explore Your Environment K–8 Activity Guide from Project Learning Tree to expand upon traditional STEM activities.
Whole School Staff Presentations
Mobilize Frederick introduces staff to the Green Schools program and collaborates with community partners to offer specialized professional learning opportunities. For example, at a joint presentation with the Frederick County Division of Energy and Environment, Windsor Knolls Middle School staff learn about their schoolshed, reforestation efforts, Frederick County water quality, and beneficial student action projects.
Green Careers
Sponsored by MAEOE, the Green Careers Fair introduces teachers to PLT’s Green Jobs Educator Guide and provides opportunities for middle and high school students to interact with career professionals in natural resources, agriculture, and sustainability careers.
Next Green Careers Fair: October 2, 2024 location TBD
